What does Memorial Day mean to you? To me, Memorial Day means the beginning of summer. It also means getting a chance to spend time with family and friends. This may not be the case for all people, however.
For most people, Memorial Day is spent outdoors, enjoying some delicious barbecue with the people they love. Baseball season is in full swing and the warm weather is finally here to stay. While all of this sounds fun and exciting, the reality is Memorial Day means something different to some others.
For families who have dealt with the loss of a loved one in the military, their Memorial Day is spent in remembrance. Memorial Day is a historic American tradition that is not only great for gathering with family and friends, but also for Americans to be reminded that freedom is not free.
Something you may not know about Memorial Day is it used to be known as Decoration Day. The original purpose was to honor the soldiers who died during the American Civil War. Beginning in the early 20th century, it became a day to honor all fallen U.S. soldiers, not just those of the Civil War. It was not until 1967 that it was renamed Memorial Day.
To me, Memorial Day means more than just getting a day off of work. It also gives me an opportunity to reflect. American freedom is not something we should take for granted. Be sure to take the time to thank a veteran this Memorial Day weekend, and please have lots of fun celebrating!
