It turns out that “Ohio, The Heart of it All” is not just a marketing slogan. Ohio is perhaps the truest reflection of Americana than any other U.S. state. While it is big, ranking 7th in population among all 50 U.S. states, its total land area ranks it much smaller at 34. Not only is it home to three major metropolitan centers, it is also highly regarded for its many nostalgic, small towns that preserve their historic character. And, Ohio independent insurance agents continue to provide quality service to local communities.
Ohio consistently ranks among the most affordable states in terms of homeowners’ and personal auto insurance premiums (per Ohio Dept. of Insurance 2025 Annual Report). How is it possible that the 7th most populous state is also one of the most affordable for personal lines insurance? Once again, Ohio’s unique attributes position it as a relative safe haven in terms of homeowners’ and auto insurance premiums. Let’s look at three main factors responsible for affordable personal lines insurance for Ohio residents:
| 1. |
Location, location, location. Ohio is not an ocean coastal state subject to hurricanes and wildfires, both of which have resulted in catastrophic insured property losses. While these catastrophic property losses have negatively affected the entire homeowners’ insurance pool, the geographic characteristics of Ohio present much less risk of extensive property loss to homes. Therefore, homeowners’ insurance premium increases in Ohio have been much less severe than in other parts of the country. However, Ohio is not immune to warming and wetter weather trends, which, under certain conditions, precipitate tornados. It is known that Ohio has experienced more tornado-favorable days in recent years, prompting some speculation that Tornado Alley is shifting east. Increasing actual loss experience due to tornados in Ohio will likely correspond with a homeowners’ insurance rate increase. |
| 2. |
Infrastructure and layout. Ohio has an extensive network of rural roads and mid-sized cities that support mobility and jobs, yet also reduces congestion. Less congestion results in fewer fender benders, which are costly. Also, the more practical population distribution in Ohio compared to other states with major metropolitan hubs translates to fewer multi-car pileups. Lower frequency and fewer auto claims result in lower automobile insurance premiums for Ohio residents. |
| 3. |
Competitive market. Ohio is one of the most competitive personal lines homeowners’ and automobile insurance markets in the country. Insurance companies want to do business in Ohio because, historically, loss ratios in Ohio have been favorable. A deep bench of different-sized insurance companies competes for Ohio’s personal lines insurance premium volume. |
