This has been a beautiful fall in Northeast Ohio warm weather and not a lot of rain but the winds have been howling, garbage cans blown around leaves everywhere and a couple of large trees in my neighborhood have been blown over. So, does insurance cover fallen trees?
Homeowner’s insurance covers the cost of damage caused by trees falling onto your home. The average cost from this type of loss is $4,110.00 according to Consumer Reports based on information from 2019.
If a tree falls on your property but does not damage your home there may be some coverage to remove the debris. Typically, if the tree is blocking access to the home (driveway or doorway) there will be coverage for the removal of the tree. If the tree does not block access to the home and does no damage to the home there may be some coverage provided.
If your neighbor’s tree falls on your fence, garage or home your insurance policy will cover the loss. Even though this is not your tree your neighbor is not liable for the damage because they were not negligent. An exception to this rule is if the neighbor is aware that the tree was sick and apt to fall. The owner of the tree was then negligent because they did not address the hazard. If you notice a dead tree on your neighbor’s property and are concerned it may fall on your property you should notify your neighbor and document with pictures the condition of the tree.
If a tree falls on your car is their coverage? Automobile insurance would address this situation. Falling objects are covered under the other than collision coverage (also known as comprehensive coverage) a portion of your automobile insurance policy. This is an optional coverage so to know if you have coverage you would need to refer to your policy.
