Hit the Highway this Memorial Day
AAA reports that gasoline prices for this Memorial Day weekend are the highest they’ve been since 2014! More families are filling up and hopping on the road in post-pandemic eagerness to see extended families, travel across state lines, and spend time in the sun.
Though summer has always been a driving season, expect more people on the road this summer as “road-tripping” is about to make a comeback! According to AAA, 1.4 million Ohioans are planning a quick getaway this weekend, with 1.3 million taking their trips on the road!
This surge of driving is expected to carry on throughout the summer as our communities continue to equitably access vaccines, re-open small businesses, and return to larger gatherings and events.
Before you hop on the road this weekend, check off this safe driving checklist to ensure that you protect you, your family, and your Memorial Day weekend.
- Drunk drivers are a road threat on Memorial Day across the country. Alcohol-related accidents can be avoided by having a designated driver, using a ride-share service, or walking if possible.
- Minimize the potential of a collision by staying out of the left lane unless passing another vehicle. You are more likely to avoid a drifting vehicle by staying on the right side of the road.
- Keep a car emergency kit tailored to you or your family. Have the basics such as spare tire, jumper cables, first aid supplies, and a small tool kit. Ensure you’re prepared with water bottles, flashlight, batteries, duct tape, candle/glowsticks, umbrella, blanket, and car escape tool (hammer, seatbelt cutter, etc).
- Recognize the signs of “highway hypnosis” and learn how to alter your alertness by changing your environment (rolling windows down or changing the position of your seat), talking aloud or to someone, taking a brisk walk, and stretching your legs every 1-2 hours to reengage your brain and recharge your reserves. For long road trips, prepare in advance by changing your route or making a playlist ahead of time with new material!
- Keep everyone entertained. Avoid those screams of “are we there yet?” by being prepared with activities, movies if your vehicle has the capability, and download media before leaving the Wi-Fi connection behind. Find a Road Trip scavenger hunt, play the road sign game, or come up with your own game to pass the time!
