In the Heat of the Summer

Climate change is upon us, July of 2023 was the hottest month on record according to the European Climate Monitoring Organization. Back in Northeast Ohio this summer has been glorious and we have only had a few days with highs in the 90’s but that does not mean as an Artisan Contractor you can’t be prepared to work in oppressive heat.
Heat Illness and Death are preventable and you must take appropriate measures to protect yourself and your employees. Below are some items to consider:
Hydration
Hydration starts at home. Drinking enough water and or sports drinks at home puts your body in a good place prior to getting to work. While on the worksite drink water every 15-20 minutes.
Rest in a shaded area out of direct sunlight
Working in direct sunlight can increase the heat index values by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to that if you are working on blacktop, or a shingle roof the temperature may be an additional 15 degrees hotter.
Have a plan
As a business owner, it is your job to protect your employees. Communicate to your team to take breaks and stay hydrated. Telling them is not enough, you should provide water and cooling stations. Provide clothing that will protect you and your employees from the heat, light-colored loose-fitting clothes will help. If possible, adjust start times for you and your team to avoid working during the hottest part of the day. Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, below is a link to an OSHA quick card to assist you in identifying the symptoms.
