Over the last six months the agency has suffered two large losses to church steeples, No, not lightning strikes (see our previous blog about lighting rods) or wind, but water incursion.

In one case, water rotted the bell tower’s flooring causing a drainpipe to pull apart allowing water to continue damaging the stone tower and other supports. As a result, part of the bell tower fell through the roof of the sanctuary! Luckily, nobody was injured or this would be a different blog.

In the other case, the bell fell from the bell tower, not only damaging the bell but the tower as well. The cause of loss is still under investigation but the loss is going to be almost $10,000.00.

Maintenance of the steeple must be part of our organization’s preventive maintenance program. If this is done once a month or once a quarter, the steeple/bell tower cannot be neglected due to the difficulty in reaching it and visually inspecting it. Below are several important maintenance items to help you keep your steeple/bell tower safe and operating properly.

1. Keep the steeple/bell tower clean. Dirt, acid rain, and grime can make the steeple look dirty and can cause damage to the structure. The best way to keep the steeple/bell tower clean is to have it power washed. Because of the unique location and of a steeple or bell tower hire a professional to do this job. Proper man lifts and safety precautions must be taken to avoid damaging the steeple/bell tower ensuring nobody is injured during the process.

2. Inspect the exterior coverings of the steeple to ensure that no boards, shingles, or bricks have been dislodged. Technology has made this task much easier and safer for those afraid of heights. Use a drone with a camera to inspect the areas mentioned so missing shingles, damage to valleys, and other damage can be easily seen.

3. Paint the exterior or seal the brick/stone. Again, due to the location of the steeple use a professional who specializes in this type of work.

4. Inspect the interior of the steeple/bell tower and if it is accessible look for water damage, vermin infestation, and of course, bats in the belfry.
